Cheoul-Shin Kang's World of Artworks
A visual representation of the Grace of God

How old is the art that visualizes human life? In fact, human life has long been embedded in various works of art such as paintings, music, and literature. There were hunters in cave paintings, and warriors leaving for the battlefield depicted in ancient Greek ceramics. There were people worshiping God in the middle ages, and a shy figure of a beautiful woman depicting a Greek goddess during the Renaissance. In this way human life has been expressed directly or indirectly in the artworks. This is because it is human being who makes artwork, and it is also human being who watches and owns it. Unlike 'nature', which harmonizes by itself, a 'culture' is created by human beings. Therefore, an artwork in which human life is well melted invites people's empathy. It is just like an air that makes one object resonate with another. The Artist Cheoul-Shin Kang also dissolves human life in his works. Ultimately, he wants to describe the Grace of God through the life of human being, God's creature.

Like a prodigal who goes back to his father...

Luke Chapter 15 contains a story of a prodigal son who left his father but eventually returned after losing everything. The story of the prodigal son has been expressed by a number of painters, including the well-known work of "The return of the prodigal son" by Rembrandt. Most of them have expressed the climax of the scene when the prodigal son came back and his Father embraced him. However, Kang shows the story through a series of small works. In his work , the prodigal son lives like pigs with pigs in a distant county after having lost everything. And he is repenting and asking to himself "Why am I living here like this?" The artist expresses the image of the prodigal son, who makes up his mind after deep thought and repent and is saying "Now I know where I should go!" And he depicts the prodigal son's long journey to the place, where his father is, where his creator is, and where the cross is. The place, beyond the barren and dark land/mountains, is a paradise where there is a beautiful and all-colorful natural landscape spreading.

It may resembles our life. The life is so huge that we are confused and overwhelmed by big and small matters and things. Nevertheless, everyone is on his journey to find his happiness that he think he can reach sometime and some day. As Kang describes in his works, the end of the journey may be where there is a compassionate father who forgives everything shown in the Luke's gospel. Kang talks about our human life - the anguish and the journey by using a series of his works, of which motif is derived from the story of the prodigal son in Luke¡¯s Gospel.

Like a rose in a transparent glass bottle, and Like musical instruments and music that harmonize...

So what do we want to have through such a tough life? It might probably varies from person to person. Some may want to meet a loving person and build a happy family with the person. Others may want to find a job and make money to buy some gifts for their parents. Young children may want to become adults soon and older people might want to regain their vivid youth. The happiness and the paradise they pursue may be different from each other. What Kang is pursing is the grace of God, and light shining in the darkness. It is Hesed - the love and mercy of God. Kang uses roses in a transparent glass bottle as Hesed's metaphor. The roses have a perfect shape with their own colors. All the leaves are complete form that is neither dead nor dry. And the three roses described by the artist seem to symbolize the Trinity God. Even though the roses are perfect shape without any slack, the vase contains a number of fragments of different colors and sizes. These pieces look like people who pray to God, share suffering with God, and receive help from Him.

While the grace of God is depicted as beautiful roses, the happiness what we are looking for is drawn as harmonizing various musical instruments and music. Music that can be perceived by the auditory sense was visualized through the musical instruments and the score image corresponding to the music together with intense colors that surround them. It is not easy for the many musical instruments to make a beautiful harmonized sound in orchestra. Each player may want to make his own sound depending on his situation, emotion, or physical condition. Nevertheless, each instrument should produce a promised melody and rhythm in order to play a single goal, harmonious music. This is not much different from our life either. Therefore, if we live in harmony with other people, like instruments that play in harmony with other instruments, it will make our place of life a paradise.

Life within the Light

When we look at three types of his works, we get an understanding of human life that could be beautiful under the light of the grace of God. Every second and every day, we have to make big and/or small decisions and have to taste a success or a failure as their result. However, the result is not the end. It could be a cause of the next decision and it would produce another situation. Thus our life could be a confusing situation like the fragments of colors in the transparent glass bottles, or a life of the prodigal son in despair. But we can find our own peace/ happiness, just as Kang found it in the Father's house, in the beautiful roses in the glass bottles, or in the harmony with other various musical instruments. He wants to talk about such a hope through his painting and is releasing it with the grace of God.

He will continue to work and create his own art world. As an artist, he showed a visual representation of his life through this solo exhibition. I hope that, in the future, he present more mature works with deeper understanding of life and insight into the grace of God.
