★김수복

삶은 예고 없는 선택과 결정 앞에 우리를 끊임없이 마주하게 한다. 낯선 순간 앞에 잔뜩 움츠리고 머뭇거리면서 그 순간순간을 홀로 결정할 때 무엇이 옳은지 무엇을 선택해야 하는지 매번 조심스럽고 고통스럽다. 그래서 우리는 때로 타자의 힘을 빌리게 된다. ‘우리’라는 공동체 안에서 잃어버린 용기와 힘을 얻게 되기 때문이다.

‘우리’라는 단어에는 사전적 의미 그 이상의 아우라가 있다. ‘우리’ 속의 개별개체가 서로 어울려 융합이 되면 혼자서는 발현할 수 없는 새로운 기운과 그에 따른 더 많은 것들로 드러난다. 개인과 개인이든 개인과 자연이든 아니면 자연과 자연이든 진정한 ‘우리’의 아우라는 서로의 어울림을 통해서만 화려하고 강력하게 나타난다.

내 작품 세계의 밑그림은 이 어울림에서 나오는 형형색색 아우라다. 작품에 등장한 나무나 물고기를 끊임없는 붓 자국의 선과 면들의 중첩을 통해 개별 개체의 구체성은 용해되고 나만의 새로운 개체로 태어난다. 대상을 구체적으로 표현하기 보다는 대상과의 기억들을 꺼내어 습관적, 관념적 터치의 선과 면의 중첩을 통해 표현했다는 의미이다.

내 작품 속의 숲이나 물고기들은 구체적인 것 같지만 어느 정도 추상적이고 집중적인 것 같지만 분산적이다. 이것은 자기만의 관념적 그림을 그릴 수 있는 여백을 감상자에게 주기 위한 작가의 의도이다. 이를 통해서 감상자는 가슴 깊은 곳에서부터 우러나오는 카타르시스를 얻을 수 있을 것이다. 그 희열을 통해서만이 내가 펼쳐 놓은 상징적 공간에서 작가와 감상자의 진정한 만남이 이루어지게 될 것이다.

In the presence of choices and decisions in our life, we encounter one another. We always struggle and caution with ongoing questions concerning what to keep when we have to make a decision. For this reason, we often rely on others; for we are encouraged and empowered by one another within a community named “We.”

The word for “We” has aura, working beyond its meaning from a dictionary. When an individual object within “we” interweaves, each object emanates new energy, subtly pervasive quality or many other characters. True aura, emanating from the realm of “we,” is presented elegantly and mightily through reciprocal harmony among individuals as well as in the natural world.

The underlying pattern of my artistic works comes from colorful aura. While the concrete outlook of each individual object is melted down through never ceasing strokes of lines and sides from a brush, frosts or fish shown in my work are born as my own new individual objects. In other words, this is an imaginative touch, yanked the memories on objects through overlapping lines and sides, rather then an expression seen as it looks.

Forests and fish in my pieces seem a concrete expression. It also looks like abstract or concentration, yet sporadic. It is my own intent as artist for the sake of viewers who can have a room for their own imaginative paintings. I hope the viewers obtain catharsis flowing from the bottom of their heart. The true encounter between viewers and the artist will be possible only by the catharsis. ⓒ
