- Study on the Latest Paintings of Lim Sunghee

"One pound of flesh, no more, no less. No cartilage, no bone, but only flesh." - Merchant of Venice of William Shakespeare / The Message of John Doe in 'Seven'

A movie Seven, directed by David Fincher and starred by Brad Pitt is a thriller which took the motif from the Bible and dealt with a serial murder incidents of 7 victims for 7 days in Grotesque atmosphere. Based on Divina Commedia written by Dante and Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer, it deals with 7 Deadly Sins : Gluttony, Greed, Sloth, Pride, Lust, Envy and Wrath and it represents the plot between a murderer who has extremely punished criminals who are linked to these sins and two detectives who have struggled to stop this calamity. Seven deadly sins appear in Divina Commedia written by Dante and Paradise Lost by Milton, and Medieval people believed that every sin including those 7 sins that tremendously drive human beings toward destruction has corresponding animals respectively. Gluttony was believed to correspond to pigs or goats, Pride to bats or peacocks and Sloth to donkey. They were rooted mostly on human's desire. Every human being has instinct to make others and society submit to himself or herself and revealing and developing the need can be called Desire. It is true that human beings are born instinctively with this attribute, however, it can be controlled both by interaction with conventions of our society and by our circumstances, and unfortunately, sometimes, it is expressed in distorted ways. Desire is mainly enacted through psychological, physical and ethical aspects with the form of characteristic such as impulse, hope or morale.

The key word which has flown through Lim Sunghee¡®s paintings so far can be definitely defined as DESIRE. Through several exhibitions, Lim Sunghee has personified pigs which are symbol of greed and represented shopping carts for portraying all sorts of desire of human beings and of social structures with a witty and humorous atmosphere. We often say desire is something that has to be overcome at any cost. But isn't being itself desire? Its root originates from one's ego, consequently changing into something to meet and sometimes developing it beyond imagination to satisfy one's scarcity. What about blindly embracing such desire? Rather than being captivated by an imperative idea that one should eliminate it from repetitively suppressing and fulfilling one's desire... Lim Sunghee paradoxically mentioned her idea regarding her motif in the exhibition titled Crushed Desire in 2010 ; desire is not something to get out of but 'something to embrace' contrary to the meaning which social conventions have carried. In a sense, human's desire seems to be an original sin. Consequently, human beings have limit to overcome their intrinsic desire that instinctually exists by birth. She regards this limit as an object of a pity. She has been consistently creating constant variations in regard to her motif with joke and humor from in 2008 to Utopia in 2013. But her Desire doesn't end in destruction but sublimate into Utopia by embracing conflicts in our lives with the positive way like hope as seen in her note.

In the movie again, The Great Beauty in 2013, directed by Paolo Sorrentino suggested that we should keep death in mind while watching the movie, by citing Journey to the End of the Night by Louis-Ferdinand Celine . This movie is a story of a successful man named Jab. In spite of being widely acknowledged as a successful author, he, in fact, wrote only one book when he was young. After publishing the book, he quitted writing, mentioning that the true beauty was nowhere to be found and began working as an interviewer at a magazine publishing company. Jab having lived as a celebrity of high society in Rome, some regret and hindsight suddenly occurred to him by the time his 65th birthday party ended. "How will I live the rest of my life?" Overlapping 18, 26 and 65-year-old Jab, the movie showed something disgusting of high society such as drugs, parties, and sex and asked when the most beautiful moments were in his life. What on earth is the truly great beauty Jab has been finding? As can be inferred from Celine's words, eventually, its ending is overlaid with 'fiction' and 'death'. The artists who don't know how to truly commune with viewers through their works, the lives overlaid with hypocrisy and death just lie in the other side of our lives regardless of fixed process and order.

Through this exhibition at Morris Gallery, what Lim intend to focus is 'death'. From death lurking around ourselves and sudden death of someone whom she loves, she probably felt vanity and meaninglessness in everything in the world. With Celine's expressive style, Lim's motif, desire, can be described, ¡°Its end looks just like a raging waves tremendously surging into the shore and breaking into foam after all¡±. Eventually, desire causes its ending to be full of useless vanity and downfall. However, adopting jokes and humor in her paintings is the way she carries the concept of death. For instance, it is possible to find the reason by analyzing the serial work Our Portrait which conveys her concepts in this exhibition. The entire atmosphere changed gloomy and turbid color of the past into bright and light one, her expression turning free and mild. Pig's facial expression looks very peaceful and even gives off the sense of happiness. The pig which knows its destiny to die is brightly portrayed as seen in a poem, Back to Heaven by Cheon Sang-Byeong. "And on the day this beautiful outing ends. I will go, and I shall say it was beautiful..." Lim seems to show psychological freedom not having any regret and obsession regarding life and shows her attitude which looks like taking a philosophical view of life on reality. Eventually, she paradoxically speaks of contemplative attitude on life through the concept of death.

So far, through the symbol of death, Lim has held on to the idea of critical point of view regarding human's psychology and the contradiction of social structures. Luckily, she has achieved success in communing with the public by carrying her motif which comes near to being stereotyped, by conveying her own humorous storytelling. Nevertheless, she seems to need some time for self-examination for aesthetics of desire and that is because communication with the viewers through just jokes and humor has the possibility of connoting any risks of deviating from the essence of artist's aim. Fortunately, I'm sure that she has had enough time for reviewing these aspects and that keeping an eye out for her art world that will hereafter unfold and deepen with philosophical perspectives will obviously present pleasure to viewers. I'm willing to give her a big hand, expecting her art world to be in full bloom.
